SALESIAN PEDAGOGY TRAINING FOR DIMAPUR PROVINCE
Thirty-seven members of the Salesian Family of the Dimapur Province participated in the two-day training in Salesian Pedagogy from February 12–14 at Don Bosco Provincial House, Dimapur. The training programme was animated by Fr. P.D. Johny, Secretary, SPCSA and Fr. Patrick Lepcha, Director of DBYA. Participants included Salesians of Don Bosco (SDBs), FMA Sisters, Salesian Cooperators, MSMHC Sisters, VSDB Sisters, and Disciples Sisters.
The Vice Provincial, who was coordinating the programme, welcomed the participants and outlined the programme's objectives. The animation aimed to deepen understanding of Don Bosco’s life and educational vision, strengthen the practice of the Preventive System based on Reason, Religion, and Loving-Kindness, promote a culture of accompaniment and Salesian presence, and equip educators to create safe, engaging, and value-based learning environments.
The first day, centred on the theme “Rediscovering Don Bosco and His Education,” invited participants to return to the heart of the Salesian charism by reflecting deeply on Don Bosco as an educator and on the enduring relevance of his educational system. The sessions explored Don Bosco not merely as a historical figure, but as a visionary father and teacher whose life was wholly dedicated to the integral growth and salvation of the young.
Special attention was given to his original educational model, the Oratory, envisioned as a holistic environment that is at once a Home that welcomes, a School that educates for life, a Parish that evangelizes, and a Playground where friendships are nurtured in joy and freedom. This integrated vision continues to define the identity of every Salesian educational institution.
The foundational pillars of the Preventive System—Reason, Religion, and Loving Kindness—were revisited as the core principles that guide Salesian pedagogy. Participants reflected on how reason fosters dialogue and understanding, religion roots education in faith and meaning, and loving kindness creates a climate of trust and affection.
The day also emphasised two essential expressions of Salesian pedagogy: Presence and Accompaniment. The educator is called to be a constant, caring, and proactive presence among the young—walking with them, guiding them patiently, and forming them not only intellectually but morally and spiritually. In rediscovering Don Bosco, the participants were reminded that authentic Salesian education is not merely a method, but a relationship—an encounter of hearts that transforms both the educator and the young.
The second day, titled “Educating with the Heart: Salesian Pedagogy in Practice,” translated this vision into concrete classroom practice. Rooted in the New Education Policy, it challenged the prevailing industrial model of education and proposed a shift toward an agricultural model that nurtures growth according to each child’s potential. Sessions explored the meaning of teaching and learning, the identity of a Salesian educator, essential teaching skills, and key principles of learning. Insights from the split-brain theory, multiple intelligences, emotional intelligence, and lateral thinking enriched the discussions. The day concluded by highlighting how a competent and current Salesian educator practices the Preventive System in daily classroom life, building protective environments and fostering a person-centred, holistic approach to education.
The sessions employed an interactive methodology that included presentations, video inputs, group discussions, quizzes, and participatory activities. Feedback from participants highlighted the program's practical relevance and enriching nature, with particular appreciation for the engaging animation and the inspiring experiences shared by the resource persons.
The program concluded at 4:00 PM on February 14 with a vote of thanks proposed by Cl. Elow Stephen, SDB. Participants departed with renewed motivation, a deeper appreciation of the Salesian charism, and a strengthened commitment to accompany young people through a spirit of presence, care, and joyful education.
